Baglamukhi Devi is the eighth of the ten Mahavidyas. She is one of the enraged forms of Adi Parashakti. Her name Bagla comes from the Sanskrit word valga (bridle), which later transformed to vagla and then Bagla. And Mukha means face.
Baglamukhi Devi is represented in two forms; one with two hands where she is pulling the tongue of the demon (Rakshas) with her left hand, while her right hand is holding the club to strike the devil. In her four-arm form, she looks fierce with her third eye, where she has a bowl of demon blood and a sword.
Baglamukhi Devi is the one who rules over evils by paralyzing their power of speech, mind, and body. In many texts related to Shaktism, she is often linked to yellow color as she dressed up and ornamented in yellow clothes, jewelry, and flowers. Even the devotees of Baglamukhi Devi wear yellow outfits while worshipping her. Thus, called her by the name “Pitambari Mata,” where “Pitam” means yellow, and “bari “means clothes.

Origin of Baglamukhi Devi:

In Krita Yuga the universe was once in danger of being destroyed due to a cosmic storm. Numerous animals were slain, and god Vishnu, who was perched atop Sesa, the cosmic serpent, was troubled himself. He visited the Haridra sacred pond (turmeric) and implemented austerity measures to address the issue. God Vishnu is also known by the name Pitambara, or he who wears yellow clothes.” As a result of God Vishnu prayers, Devi Tripura-sundari materialised and lit up the entire earth with her being there. She presented Baglamukhi mata also known as Devi Pitambara, as she appeared in the pond of turmeric. Baglamukhi Devi used her amazing abilities to quiet the tempest.
The gods prayed to Baglamukhi Devi on being outraged by demon Madan’s mischief. She grabbed hold of the demon’s tongue and silenced his speech, halting his fury. But he asked for him to be worshiped alongside Maa Baglamukhi, and she gave in before she could kill him.
Baglamukhi Devi is known for her magical powers. It is also said that one can acquire supernatural powers by worshiping Her. Lots of things are spoken about her capability to destroy enemies. She is also said to control five prāṇa-s in the body (praṇa, apana, vyana, udana and samana). Though she has been portrayed as a negative goddess, it is also said that she is capable of bestowing highest spiritual knowledge and consequent liberation. She is said to be living in the upper palate of human body, where cerebrospinal fluid enters throat from the skull. This fluid is known as amṛta in kuṇḍalini meditation. When she is meditated upon, she protects the aspirant. She is also described as the commander of the army of Parasakti, as Baglamukhi Devi was created by Parasakti, only to destroy that great storm. This storm can be subtly explained as the storm of the mind, where mind fights hard to find out what is right and what is not right. A realized mind is always beyond dualities. But an ordinary mind always struggles to find a solution, leading to multiple thought processes. If she is worshiped properly, mind is calmed.
